Different models make very different trade-offs between sharpness, temporal stability, and artifacts; the only reliable way to pick the right one for your footage is to run the same clip through all of them. Everything processes on our own GPU server, never a third-party API.

  • Source resolution is capped at 1920×1080 — restoration targets low-resolution footage, and 4x output of 1080p is already 4K+.
  • Models run from fastest to slowest (Real-ESRGAN first, VRT last) so partial results exist early.
  • A failed model never sinks the job — its folder contains FAILED.txt and the other results still download.
  • Download links stay valid for 6 hours; the archive can be large when enhanced frames are included.

  • Real-ESRGAN runs the realesrgan-x4plus GAN through a Vulkan binary — the fastest model and a good baseline for every comparison.
  • SwinIR uses the large real-world SR GAN (003_realSR_BSRGAN SwinIR-L x4) with tiled inference so high resolutions fit in GPU memory.
  • HAT runs Real_HAT_GAN_SRx4, a hybrid attention transformer that often produces the sharpest individual frames.
  • BasicVSR++ propagates information between frames recurrently, which keeps textures stable where per-frame models shimmer.
  • RVRT and VRT are video restoration transformers that process the sequence with temporal attention — typically the highest quality and by far the slowest.
  • Frame extraction uses ffmpeg with vsync 0; stitching re-encodes with libx264 CRF 16 at the exact source frame-rate fraction (e.g. 30000/1001) so audio stays in sync.
  • A 2x request still runs each model’s native 4x network and downscales with Lanczos during stitching — quality is identical and the pipeline stays uniform.
  • Every model runs under a GPU scheduler lease with per-model VRAM budgets, and one restoration job runs at a time so jobs never starve each other.

  • Which AI video upscaling model is best?

    It genuinely depends on the footage — that is the reason this tool exists. GAN upscalers like Real-ESRGAN and HAT produce crisp individual frames but can shimmer in motion; video models like BasicVSR++, RVRT, and VRT use neighboring frames for stability but can look softer. Run your own snippet through all of them and judge with your eyes.

  • Why is the clip limited to 15 seconds?

    Restoration models are extremely GPU-intensive — VRT can take several seconds per frame at 4x. A short snippet keeps the multi-model comparison fast and is all you need to evaluate quality before committing to a longer restoration elsewhere.

  • What is the difference between the two model groups?

    Frame-by-frame enhancers (Real-ESRGAN, SwinIR, HAT) upscale each frame independently, so their results include both the enhanced frames and a stitched video. Video restoration models (BasicVSR++, RVRT, VRT) process the sequence as a whole using temporal information, and produce only an enhanced video.

  • Does the restored video keep my audio?

    Yes. The selected snippet is trimmed with its audio, and every model’s output is stitched back together with that audio at the exact source frame rate, so all results stay in sync for A/B playback.

  • What does the results package contain?

    One folder per model with its enhanced MP4 (frame-by-frame models can also include every enhanced frame as PNGs), the original trimmed snippet for reference, a README, and a manifest.json with per-model timings, output dimensions, and any failures.

  • What happens if one model fails?

    The job keeps going. The failed model’s folder contains a FAILED.txt with the reason, the manifest records it, and every other selected model’s result is still packaged and downloadable.

  • Is 4x always better than 2x upscaling?

    No. 4x shines on genuinely low-resolution sources (540p and below). On 720p–1080p sources, 4x produces enormous files for little visible gain, which is why auto mode picks 2x there.

  • Can AI restoration fix any video?

    It can sharpen detail, reduce noise, and upscale resolution, but it cannot reconstruct information that was never captured. Severely blurred motion, extreme compression blocking, or very dark footage will improve — not become pristine.

  • How long does a restoration run take?

    It scales with snippet length and model choice. Real-ESRGAN handles a 10-second clip in a few minutes; VRT can take an hour for the same clip. The picker shows a live estimate per model, and the models run fastest-first so early results are never blocked by slow ones.
